Galaxy/eiNet :: The Web's Original Searchable Directory
Galaxy/eiNet History

Galaxy: a massive ensemble of hundreds of millions of stars, all gravitationally interacting, and orbiting about a common center (Encarta).

A similar parallel is drawn to that of Galaxy/eiNet and the Internet. Launched in January 1994, Galaxy/eiNet was the first searchable Internet directory. Galaxy was created as part of the Einet division at the MCC Research Consortium at the University of Texas, Austin. The original initiative was to develop tools for large-scale directory services to support electronic commerce.

In April 1995, SunRiver Corporation (now know as BoundlessTech) purchased Einet. Einet's name was changed to TradeWave Corporation (www.tradewave.com) and Galaxy/eiNet became a commercial entity. Galaxy/eiNet was purchased by CyberGuard (a leading Internet Security firm) in 1997, and in September 1998, CyberGuard (www.cyberguard.com) sold Galaxy/eiNet to America's Health Network (AHN.COM), distinguished for its broadcast of the first live Internet birth.

In May 1999, Fox/News Corporation became co-owner of Galaxy/eiNet as part of the AHN and FitTV merger. This merger created The Health Network, the largest Cable/Internet Health Content and Distribution company in the world. In January 2000, The Health Network was sold to Healtheon/WebMD as part of $1 billion deal between Rupert Murdoch's News Corp (NYSE: NWS) and WebMD (Nasdaq: HLTH). At the completion of this transaction, Galaxy/eiNet was spun out into it own company in May 2000 as Galaxy.com, LLC.

The first ever marketing campaign introducing Galaxy/eiNet was launched in the Fall of 2000 with "30 Days on the Internet". 30 Days on the Internet selected the 10 best sites in 30 different topic categories. Galaxy/eiNet's Internet Librarians culled through millions of sites to select the 10 best and then the Galaxy/eiNet visitors selected the number one site overall. The winners were announced at the Fall Internet World at the Javitz Center in New York City. As a result of the marketing campaign, Galaxy/eiNet traffic tripled in the first two months and Galaxy/eiNet now serves over 3,000,000 visitors per month.

In June 2001, Logika Corporation purchased Galaxy/eiNet. Logika Corporation owns and operates NameDroppers.com, FusionBot.com and Hashtags.org. Galaxy/eiNet and First-Search's directories and technologies have been combined to offer one of the best directories and search engines for consumers today, delivering the most relevant results to search queries.

The Internet has exploded on the American cultural and business scene and has rapidly become the indispensable tool for consumers, marketing and sales organizations, and the general public. Between 1995 and the end of 1997, Internet users among U.S. adults increased more than four-fold, from 8.4 million to 36.3 million (1997 American Internet User Survey). By the end of 1999, 94.1 million North Americans had Internet connections (Computer Economics 1999). Worldwide, there are 77.1 million additional online users for a total online population of 171.2 million. The Internet now far exceeds the reach of any one media outlet. The demographics of these users are very attractive, according to ZD Market Intelligence, almost one-third of US households connected to the Internet have annual income of $75,000 or greater, and over a quarter have completed post graduate studies.

The information revolution being driven by the Internet is often compared to the cultural and economic impact of the industrial revolution. With everything at our fingertips from the entire Library of Congress to the school work of individual elementary students, the most important tool of this new age is one that will allow us to efficiently sort through this maze of information to obtain the useful and understandable information we really need.

Galaxy/eiNet, the Internet's first search engine is that tool, which the Internet will revolve around well into the new millenium.
