J. Everitt - 10/24/09 05:27:07 - 78.145.239.242Very poor experience using wmbhoyt.com. I placed an order for a number of Giclee Canvas prints over the internet (needing international delivery as i'm in the UK), the order was accepted and I was told the prints would be ready in a week or 2. Roughly 2 weeks after the order was placed I received an e-mail from them asking for me to provide at least '2 business references' as this is their policy when shipping oversea's. Failing to understand why I was being asked to supply references and what type of references were required I e-mailed them back for clarification. I received an e-mail back that didn't make it particularly clear why these references were required. It was mentioned that 'generally our customers are grateful for the protective measures we have in place', which obviously I would be if they had told me what these protective measures were and why references from 'folks I do business with' were required to effect this 'protection'. Growing a bit concerned of where this was leading I e-mailed them back with the details of my picture framers (as this was the only relevant business reference I could think of). Having slept on it and had more time to think, I followed this up with a further e-mail just to ask for clarification on whether they would be able to supply the prints as I hadn't been able to provide 2 'business references' and explained that I still didn't understand why references were required and my concerns that this as far as I could see in no way led to any extra security for me as I customer. I received an e-mail back from them a few hours later simply stating that 'i'm cutting you loose, good luck'. Put simply I was dumfounded and still am. Not a clue what i'm supposed to have done wrong, there was no offence in any of my e-mails, I was just confused and asking for an explanation from them as to why I needed these references etc. Gob smacked! Anyway I would still say that Mr Hoyt's paintings are wonderful works of art and wouldn't want to put anyone off buying from them, I would just like to make potential customers aware (especially if they live outside the US) that purchasing from wmbhoyt.com is not quite as simple as you might think. Having shown the e-mails to family and friends their reaction is also one of bewilderment. The only reason anyone has come up with for these strange turn of events is that in some way they are vetting potential customers so that prints can only be sold to people they consider suitable and for whatever reason i'm not of the required caliber - fair enough if that's the way it is, but it seems a strange way to do business to me. Wonderful artist, very odd business practices.
