The Department has been consistently ranked nationally in the top ten, and Syracuse is one of only four private universities in the USA to include a graduate geography department. Initially, the department was combined with that of Geology, until it became a separate unit in 1931, its first graduates entering in 1926. Many of its alumni hold distinguished positions in the academic, public and private sectors.
