The S. pombe pilot sequencing project was initiated by the Sanger Centre in 1995 and was funded by the Wellcome Trust. This pilot project, during 1995 to 1996, sequenced about 66% of S. pombe chromosome 1 (around 3.8 Mb of unique sequence submitted to the EMBL database).
